Poonkatru Pudhidhanathu - Moondram Pirai

Last week one of my beloved reminded me of Moondram Pirai songs. Unfortunately I was not carrying those songs in my mobile or hard disk. I was left stranded with the song just running in my mind. I desperately wanted to listen to Poonkatru Pudhidhanathu from that classic movie - One of Raja Sir's infinite gem of a creation.

With most sites blocked at my office, I was pounding the net through my mobile and found a few links. I clicked on one of them and waited impatiently for the 3 minutes it took to download and played it only to realize that it was a karaoke version and was sung by some not so gifted yet quite so audacious, Yesudas sir 'wannabe'.

After listening to him the craving to listen to Yesudas sir's actual voice only exponentially increased in me. Its too difficult not to yield to such temptations. I strode to the internet kiosk and pulled the song from cooltoad and plugged the music into me and allowed myself to be hit by waves and waves of goose bumps...

The only that thing that strikingly reminds me of, after listening to this song is this dialog from the movie Music and Lyrics:

Sophie (Drew Barrymore) - “A melody is like seeing someone for the first time, the physical attraction, SEX. But then as you get to know the person – that’s the lyrics, the story, who they are underneath”

I think that statement would suit for all songs and especially this masterpiece from the maestro. When I first heard it, I don’t know how I managed to completely ignore the lyrics, maybe because of Yesudas sir's voice or the soulful melody. I kept humming the tune all day long today at work, not exactly knowing the words.

Tonight when I heard it again, I specifically paid attention to the lyrics and realized that this might probably be one of the best songs I have heard in recent times, better than even Ilayaraaja sir’s other songs. The song touches many aspects of a common man’s life - loneliness, poverty, relationship, spirituality, Love and many more, all in a simple, pleasant and yet powerful way.

I don’t know who the lyricist is, but this is one powerful song that I am sure is going to haunt me for a long, long time. I love Ilayaraaja for the genius in him and for all the magic he has weaved over all these years. I think no one can blend the “charanam” and the “pallavi” as he does and this song is no exception.

Songs from the Tamil Movie - Anne Anne

Quite often when I get bored with new music, I delve into my collection of old mp3 songs. Quite common for people to do so, nowadays, with almost all the mobiles coming with an mp3 player - you have complete access to any music you want.

Yet, there are times when you would want to hear a particualr song from a particular movie, which, unfortunately, not many would have even heard of. One such movie is Anne Anne - a real gem of a movie, extremely funny and some very good performance by all people involved.

It was a movie written and directed by Mouli, one really talented and unfortunately less seen on screen veteran. And it has some really good music composed by Maestro Ilayaraaja. The music right throughout adds up to the comical aura of the script and has this amazing number - "Uruginen" - beautifully rendered by SPB and S.Janaki.

Anyways, when I pounded the internet to see if I can get a copy of the songs from this movie, I could not find any except for a broken version of one song. I tried some other sources and some audio stores too, but got nothing more than some awkward stares.

But luckily I got the actual movie (in VCD format) from one of the video stores near my office. So, for people who wanted these songs, I have them uploaded at:
